Technology Committee meeting     2-13-08

 Present: Paul Mckenna, Jesus Ranon, Hanh Tran, Maury Pearl, David Jordan, 

David Garza, Phoebe Rivera, Richard Rains

 

 

 Agenda items: 

 

 

1.      Review and approve minutes of 12-19-07

 

      Minutes reviewed to include reference to subcommittee responsible for producing

      Smart Classroom needs/resources/availability survey.

      Minutes approved unanimously.

 

2.      IT Update

 

      Hanh Tran briefly discussed several topics:

 

1)      Moodle – This software product has been in use and supported by a vendor in

      New Jersey during the last five years.  It is suggested that the software should be

      used for blended classes with students taking classes online.

 

2)      Portal - In contrast, the new LA Mission portal is projected to be much more

      useful for students attending classes in campus. It is projected that 80% of faculty

      members will be trained in portal usage by the end of the semester. Training will be

      planned and scheduled in two weeks from today.

 

3)      A Bond proposition will provide funds for technology upgrades projects.  A

      meeting to discuss college technology needs will be held on 2/20. It was suggested

      that the proposed Smart Classroom survey should be completed before the meeting

      next Wednesday. The question of whether all Smart Classroom units will include labs

      was raised.

 

4)      Smart Classroom survey - Maury Pearl suggests survey form should be filled out by

      Faculty. Maury assumed responsibility for making survey form available on

      faculty/staff portal. Hanh asserts faculty members will have a Webpage link to make

      syllabus, instructor’s telephone numbers and personal e-mail address, and class

      materials available to students. Those instructors taking advantage of Webpage will

      be provided with appropriate links. Users will be responsible for updating their own

      page. Faculty members will have their .edu e-mail address accessible from portal

      linked to district directory. Personal e-mail addresses and other personal data may be

      made available to students via portal links maintained by users. The survey were prepared by a subcommittee including Richard Rains and Phoebe Rivera and modified by Maury Pearl.

     

3.      Complete update of Committee objectives

 

1)   Library resources

            It is suggested to offer students workshops to learn about library resources. Students

enrolled in classed should have access to library resources. Students will login using

their ID#.

 

 

 

4.      Review and approve minutes of 12-05-07

 

Minutes reviewed, corrected, and approved

 

 

 

5.      Plan projects for Spring 2008

 

      Topic was tabled until next meeting.

 

 

 

6.       Meeting adjourned promptly at 1:00.
